Juvéderm® Injectable Fillers

Juvéderm® is a filler product that is made from laboratory hyaluronic acid. Along with collagen and elastin, hyaluronic acid is found inside the dermis and is responsible for maintaining the skin's hydration (water absorption).

Juvéderm® can be injected in many areas of the face. Some of these areas include the lips (to maintain volume or to get rid of fine lines), the folds around the mouth, the cheeks, the frown lines, forehead lines as well as other areas.

Juvéderm® is injected with a small needle and injections can be performed with local anesthesia. Swelling lasts about 12 hours and the results can last from 3 to 6 months.

Jacksonville Juvéderm® specialists Phillip and Roberto Garcia perform all filler injections personally to ensure optimal results.

About Juvéderm®

There has been a recent surge of publicity pertaining to the use of volume filling agents that help in the elimination of folds within the skin. As you remember, the skin and the deeper tissues age via the effects of gravity, and wherever there are sagging tissues, there develop furrows or deep folds within the skin. Volume filling agents can fill those furrows or folds and give the appearance of youth and vitality.

These materials can also be used to enhance the fullness and height of the lips. The most commonly treated areas include the lips, cheeks, chin, and in between the eyebrows.

Filler agents are a generic term that include both natural and biosynthetic materials fabricated in a laboratory. For many years, silicone was the ideal filling agent for its permanence, biocompatibility, and ease of application. As you recall, silicone was taken off of the market in the early 1990’s for causing systemic illnesses in patients who had silicone breast implants. This led to the development of various other materials.

Although marketed as “long lasting,” no filler agent is permanent. The advantage of these filling agents, however, is the ease of application and the tolerance by the patient.

The most common fillers on the market are those that are made of Hyaluronic Acid. Juvederm is the only synthetic Hyaluronic Acid filler on the market that is FDA approved to last up to one year. The advantage that Juvederm® has over its competitors is the ease of application. The material is a gel matrix that is easily placed in folds and creases of the face to increase volume or to simply "remove a dent".

Juvederm® FAQs

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid (or HA) is a naturally occuring substance in the skin of all animals. This product is a key ingredient in the creation and maintenance of healthy, vibrant, and full skin. When the skin ages, there is an inherent loss of this substance in the skin giving it a thinned appearance with loss of character.
HA products like Juvederm® act to fill in areas that have wasted with time. The added benefit is that it draws fluid to it giving the region that has been treated even more volume.

Juvederm® will last up to one year. You can expect to see a gradual loss of the volume over time. The changes that you will see are drastic, but very natural.

What can I expect on the day of my injection?

When you come in for your injection, you will be seen only by a Double Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon. Photographs will be taken and you will visit with Dr. Garcia so that you may have ample time to discuss with him your areas of concern and what you expect from your injectable treatment.
Dr. Garcia will have you make several facial animations to properly decipher where the major folds are located.
A topical anesthetic is placed on the skin to minimize any discomfort that you would have from the injections. Oftentimes, Dr. Garcia will perform a painless dental block to alleviate any discomfort that you may have from the injection process.

Juvederm® can be injected into any fold of the face including the marionette lines, the smile lines of the cheek (parantheses folds), lips, cheeks, glabellar furrows, below the eyes, and anywhere else there may be a need to augment.
A cold pack is placed directly on the injection sites to help with any discomfort and redness. You can actually return to work right after your treatment!
You may notice a scant amount of redness at the sites of injection, but this will subside by the time you return home.
The whole process takes less than 30 minutes from the time you walk into the consult room!

When Can I begin to see the Results?

You can expect to see results immediately after your injection. You can keep the swelling down to a minimum if you keep the area iced with cold compresses. Avoid strenuous exercise for a minimum of 24 hours to avoid additional bruising and swelling.
